About Us
This journey began when Paul and Jim, long-time jetboaters, bought an inflatable outboard jetboat for backcountry fly fishing, where their larger jetboats couldn't reach. After struggling on a challenging river, they realized the need for an efficient reverse system. Discovering this was a global problem with no aftermarket options, they decided to create their own solution.
They enlisted Sam, a talented engineering draughtsman, to CAD their ideas and develop prototypes. After 12 months of hard work, they created the highly effective 'Back-Up' bucket reverse system.
The system's success led Paul, Jim, and Sam to found OB Jet Innovations, aiming to bring their Back-Up reverse system to market and develop high-quality products for outboard jetboaters dissatisfied with OEM options. OB Jet Innovations is dedicated to making outboard jetboating safer and more efficient. Don't settle for less—explore our products today.

Paul loves jetboating and bought his first ex-world champs hull, Boney M, from Kevin Aitchison around 1986, followed by Solid Gold. When not in his workshop working on a project, Paul can be found doing what his lovely wife Jude tells him to do. His latest project, alongside Sam, has been designing a space-framed chassis for a nine-meter 5th wheel RV. Paul, a keen fly fisherman, enjoys exploring remote areas of New Zealand in an inflatable outboard jet with Jim. This remoteness inspired Paul and Jim to develop outboard jetboat parts to make the sport safer.

Director - Design & Marketing
Jim has been a passionate jetboater for 50 years, with extensive engineering knowledge in jetboat and jet unit design and performance. His latest project is building an exact replica of Saucy Jane, Bill Hamilton's first jetboat, using just three photographs. This will be the only replica of this iconic jetboat in the world. Jim's endeavor is supported by his wife and best mate, Noelene, who allows him to purchase classic boats on a sell-two, buy-one basis.

Sam is the best engineering draughtsman in the business. Joining OB Jet Innovations allows him to channel his skills and abilities into a business he is a part of, rather than trading his intellectual property for an hourly rate. He is supported by his amazing wife, Celina, and their three gorgeous kids.

Does the Back-Up reverse jump out of reverse? No. The unique OB-Jet developed linkage system is designed to lock the Back-Up reverse system in reverse and will not release until you engage the forward gear.
-
Why did you design the OBJet Back-Up reverse system? We are avid boaters, frequently navigating fast-flowing, remote high country rivers. On several occasions, we faced near-dangerous situations that could have easily resulted in potential drownings. These experiences starkly highlighted the critical limitations of the standard OEM reverse system. Recognizing the urgent need for a safer reversing option, we committed ourselves to finding a solution. This commitment to safety for all outboard jet boating owners and their families became the driving force behind Outboard Jet Innovations.
-
Does the OBJet Back-Up reverse system stall my engine in reverse like the standard OEM reverse bucket does? No, this is one of the major benefits of the OBJet Back-Up reverse system. With ours your throttle directly co-relates to the amount of thrust you get at the bottom end.
-
I have a rod linkage system between the lever and the OEM reverse bucket instead of the cable system, is this an issue? No, all you need to do is select the accessory cable system option when purchasing and you will be good to go.
-
How hard is it to install the OBJet Back-Up reverse system? The installation is extremely easy and should be easily fitted within 30 minutes. The OBJet Back-Up reverse system comes with installation instructions included or you can download them from our website. Alternatively there is a video you can watch on our website that visually shows you how to fit it
-
I see in the instructions that we may have to file a small radius on the mounting block - why?Yes, unfortunately, this small compromise is necessary for certain jet units to allow the unimpeded up-and-down action of the OBJet Back-Up bucket. After making this adjustment, you might want to touch it up with a bit of paint—or simply embrace it as another adventure scar, adding character to your boat alongside any other scratches and dents!
-
Can I fit the Back-Up reverse system myself?Yes, if you have basic practical skills and know how to use a spanner, installation is very straightforward. The OB-Jet Back-Up reverse system is designed to utilize existing outboard jet mounting points and gear cables. Full installation instructions are included with each OB-Jet Back-Up reverse system sold.
-
My engine has the forward/reverse lever on the tiller arm. Will your standard OBJet Back-Up reverse system still fit?Yes it will. As long as your forward/reverse system still has the standard one cable system to the OEM reverse bucket, our reverse will install as standard.
-
Can the Back-Up reverse system drop down when powering forward? No. The unique OB-Jet developed linkage system is also designed to lock the Back-Up reverse system in forward gear and will not release until you engage either neutral or reverse.
